Congratulations to Voyage of the Damned for the amazing ratings
performance it had on Christmas Day. It averaged 12.2 million viewers
(overnight rating) during its 72 minutes (peaking at 13.8 million in
the last 15 minutes), number 2 for the day behind an episode of
Eastenders and seems set to be one of the top rated UK shows of 2007,
especially when timeshifted viewers are counted. It was the most
watched episode of the new Doctor Who, toppling Rose from that perch.
The most watched episode since installments of City Of Death in 1979,
when there were 3 channels in the UK and one was not running
programming due to a strike. The most watched episode where the other
main channel was actually airing programmes since 1977 (The Robots Of
Death). Full details on the Doctor Who News Page
http://www.doctorwhonews.com .
By the way, the Thursday 5PM BBC One encore of last year's Christmas
Special (The Runaway Bride) averaged 3 million viewers (overnight
rating), winning its timeslot. Certainly the highest rated repeat in
the revival and probably since 1993 or before.
The regular 4th Series of Doctor Who should begin in March or April
(exact Saturday yet to be determined). It will have 13 episodes -
with David Tennant and Catherine Tate as the regular cast, and Freema
Agyeman as Martha Jones in 5 episodes (and some other familiar faces
reappearing). After that, the Christmas 2008 episode, 3 "Special"
episodes in 2009, and the 13 episode Series 5 comes in 2010.
Germany finally gets the new Doctor Who. Pro 7 http://www.prosieben.de purchased Series 1 and 2 years ago, and has now found room in their schedule for the adventures of the Time Lord. Rose will air on Saturday 26 January at 5PM CET. The rest of Series 1 and 2 will air at 2 episodes per week from 2 February. Here's hoping for a big splash with German audiences leading to a shorter lag time before Series 3 and 4 make it over.
The New Year brings new repeat runs for the show:
UK - UKTV Drama - Classic Who weekdays (episodic format) at 12:20PM and 5PM, complete stories Saturdays 11ishPM and Sundays 8AM - starts Wednesday 2 January
UK - UKTV Gold - New Who from the beginning - 2 episodes Saturdays at 11AM, repeats at 3:40PM - starts Saturday 5 January
